Modern Foreign Languages

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) at Swallow Hill Community College

Learning a foreign language can be life transforming. We know because it happened to our MFL teachers: they have lived and worked in the UK, Spain, France and Russia. The Foreign Languages department at Swallow Hill has two objectives:

- To provide our students with the opportunity of learning either French or Spanish up to GCSE level. As you might know, doing at least one language is required to achieve the English Baccalaureate. Colleges, universities and employers nationally and internationally value having a language qualification.

- To whet the appetite and interest of our students for language learning. Our department strives to enable all students across the ability range to fulfil their potential and develop competence in French or Spanish.

Our department believes that learning should be visual and evident to anybody who visits us. Therefore, our lessons are colourful, dynamic and full of interaction. We seek to use every opportunity to communicate in the target language and we use all sorts of resources and techniques to advance our students’ progress. In addition to acquiring language for the purpose of communicating with others, students are taught the importance of thinking about how languages function whilst improving grammatical knowledge. A solid understanding of grammar is fundamental when manipulating languages. This understanding enables the desired level of flair and sophistication.

For those who need extra support, we offer extra sessions after school and for those with a desire to go the extra mile, the MFL department offers a Russian language club once a week. Russian is not only a beautiful language, spoken by millions of people but also a language for culture and business; you might not be aware that we are the only school in Leeds currently offering some Russian language teaching.

Furthermore, students are given an invaluable insight into the countries whose languages are being studied, thereby developing positive attitudes to foreign culture, history and society.
