Transition: FAQ's

My child has been allocated a place at Swallow Hill, what happens next?

You should have received an email welcoming you to the academy which details all the transition arrangements for students who are starting Swallow Hill in September. If you have not received this, please contact the main office at the academy.

When will my child get the opportunity to come up and visit Swallow Hill?

We will be holding three transition days at the end of June. Every child due to start Swallow Hill in September is invited to attend all three transition days.

When are the transition days?

The transition days are on Tuesday 19th June, Wednesday 27th June and Thursday 5th July.

What times are the transition days?

The transition days will be from 8.30am to 2.35pm.

Where does my child go on the transition days?

Miss Titorenko and other members of the Swallow Hill staff will be waiting to greet you outside our student reception at the top of the drive from where we will direct students into our main hall.

What should my child wear on the transition days?

Your child can wear their current school uniform. We also recommend wearing trainers or pumps as they may have the opportunity to do some PE.

What if my child cannot attend one of the transition days?

Don’t worry, this is why we have three. We are aware that some schools will be away on residential trips etc. Miss T will be aware of which schools cannot attend the transition days.

Where can I drop my child off / pick them up?

You may walk your child up to the top of the drive and drop them off at main reception.  You may also wait at the same place at the end of the day to pick them. We ask that if you are dropping off / picking up by car that you use Congress Mount as we do not allow cars up the drive between 8.15am-8.30am and 2.45pm-3pm.

Can their siblings, who currently attend Swallow Hill, drop them off / pick them up?

Yes absolutely. We will be more than happy to supervise your child until 2.45pm until a sibling can pick them up.

Do I need to provide a packed lunch for my child?

No, we feel that eating in our canteen is a big part of the transition process and meals will be provided free of charge on all transition days. However, you may want to send your child with a water bottle for use throughout the day. We have water fountains so your child can keep this topped up.

What will my child do on transition days?

We will be giving them tours of the academy to ensure they really get a feel for the place. They will have the opportunity to take part in a number of subjects, meet their new teachers and meet new friends.

Will parents have an opportunity to visit the academy?

Yes, we will be holding a parent information evening near the transition days (date to be confirmed). The Principal, Mrs Atkins-Mackley, will give a presentation in the main hall; you will have the opportunity to meet your child’s form tutors and ask any questions you may have about your child starting the academy in September.

Who should I contact if I need any more information or want to discuss my child?

The first point of contact is Miss Titorenko, who is the Achievement Leader for Year 7. Please contact 0113 263 0110 or email her at

Will you be having a Summer School?

Summer Schools run on external funding. We are currently in the process of securing funding for a two week Summer School. If we are successful in getting the funding, we will inform you of the arrangements for enrolling your child onto the programme.
