The academy kitchen is managed by Chartwells who were contracted by Education Leeds to provide all of the food for Swallow Hill. Chartwells have a long tradition of catering for schools and they ensure that all of their food complies with the latest nutritional standards so that our children have healthy and balanced diets.

All meals served in the academy comply with nutritional standards. This means that there is always high quality meat, poultry or oily fish, at least 2 portions of fruit and vegetables with every meal and bread, other cereals and potatoes. There is no more 2 portions of deep-fried food a week and no fizzy drinks, crisps, chocolate or sweets are available. You can read more about nutritional standards in school on the School Food Trust Website.

The canteen is large enough to accommodate all students in the academy and is open before the academy day, at break time and at lunchtime. As well as serving a large variety of hot meals, there is also a dedicated sandwich and salad counter. Students can also bring a packed lunch if they wish.

Students are not permitted to leave the academy site at any point through the academy day.

Fresh, chilled water is available from the drinking fountains situated throughout the academy. Studies show a direct link between drinking water and increased concentration and success - for this reason, we encourage all students to bring a clear water bottle with them to the academy.

The canteen also offers a large range of healthy drinks including fresh juices and milk based drinks. Energy drinks, fizzy drinks and 'Sport Isotonic' are not permitted on site and will be confiscated and disposed of.

Free School Meals

If you receive benefits, your child may be entitled to free school meals. Every day, children and young people across Leeds are missing out on their free school meal. Child Friendly Leeds encourages families to check if they are eligible - it could save £10 a week for each child.

You may be entitled to free school meals if you are in receipt of the following benefits:

✔ Income Support
✔ Income Based Jobseekers Allowance
✔ Income Related Employment and Support Allowance
✔ Child Tax Credit with an annual income of less than £16,190, provided you are not receiving Working Tax Credit
✔ The 'Guaranteed' element of the State Pension Credit
✔ Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

Please note: If you are receiving Working Tax Credit, regardless of your income level, you do not qualify.

To find out if you are eligible, you can call Leeds Revenues and Benefits Service on 0113 222 4404 or speak to Michelle Heaton at the academy on 0113 2630110.
